KABUL: An explosion hit a bank in the Afghan capital on Tuesday, close to the heavily protected US embassy compound, killing at least one person, officials said.
Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said the blast hit the entrance to a Kabul Bank branch.

The public health ministry said one person had been killed and eight wounded.

A suicide bomber blew himself up on a busy shopping street near the US embassy in central Kabul on August 29, killing four people and injuring several others, officials said. It was the latest in a series of deadly attacks to hit the Afghan capital, and comes three months after a massive truck bomb ripped through the same area, killing about 150 people.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which came as banks are busy with people withdrawing money ahead of the Muslim Eid holiday at the end of the week.
