Why Can’t Theologians Explain the Trinity Doctrine?

The doctrine of the Trinity states that “the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and yet there are not three gods but one God.” In other words, 1+1+1=One! When it comes to explaining how this can be, our best theologians cannot explain it. It is declared as a mystery that cannot be explained and so we are told to just accept it.

The Trinity doctrine was not formalized until long after the Bible was completed and the apostles were long dead in their graves, and long after the man who introduced the word Trinity was dead and in his grave. It took later theologians centuries to sort out what they believed and to formulate the belief in the Trinity!

The New Bible Dictionary says that “the formal doctrine of the Trinity was the result of several inadequate attempts to explain who and what the Christian God really is … To deal with these problems the Church Fathers met in [A.D.] 325 at the Council of Nicaea to set out an orthodox biblical definition concerning the divine identity.” However, it wasn’t until 381, “at the Council of Constantinople, [that] the divinity of the Spirit was affirmed.”

By no means are theologians’ explanations of the Trinity doctrine clear. Religious writer A.W. Tozer in his book The Knowledge of the Holy states that the Trinity is an “incomprehensible mystery” and that attempts to understand it “must remain forever futile.” He admits that Churches, “without pretending to understand,” have nevertheless continued to teach this doctrine (1961, pp. 17, 18) He then remarkably concludes, “The fact that it cannot be satisfactorily explained, instead of being against it, is in its favor.” — (p. 23)

The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary in its article on the Trinity concedes that the Trinitarian concept is humanly incomprehensible, “It is admitted by all who thoughtfully deal with this subject that the Scripture revelation here leads us into the presence of a deep mystery; and that all human attempts at expression are of necessity imperfect.” — (1988, p. 1308)

Cyril Richardson, professor of Church history at New York’s Union Theological Seminary, though a dedicated Trinitarian himself said this in his book, “My conclusion, then, about the doctrine of the Trinity is that it is an artificial construct … It produces confusion rather than clarification; and while the problems with which it deals are real ones, the solutions it offers are not illuminating. It has posed for many Christians dark and mysterious statements, which are ultimately meaningless, because it does not sufficiently discriminate in its use of terms.” — (The Doctrine of The Trinity, 1958, pp. 148-149)

He also admitted, “Much of the defense of the Trinity as a ‘revealed’ doctrine, is really an evasion of the objections that can be brought against it.” — (p. 16)

A Dictionary of Religious Knowledge states regarding the Trinity, “Precisely what that doctrine is, or rather precisely how it is to be explained, Trinitarians are not agreed among themselves.” — (Lyman Abbott, editor, 1885, “Trinitarians”)

Why do even those who believe in the Trinity doctrine find it so difficult to explain?

The answer is simple yet shocking. It is because the Bible does not teach it! One cannot prove or explain something from the Bible that is not Biblical. The Bible is our only reliable source of divine revelation. And the truth as we will see is that the Trinity concept simply is not part of God’s revelation to mankind. It is a doctrine of devils to steal souls from the kingdom.

  1. This article does not accurately represent the Trinity doctrine or its explanation. It also attempts the tiresome explanation that all things are conspiracies.

I would encourage anyone interested in the Trinity to look at this playlist of videos on the subject (Biblical study, History, SDA History, and EGW).

I will now unlike this channel, not because I believe differently but because it does not attempt to treat those they disagree with respectfully. One should represent the other opinion in the best light possible and then demonstrate how it falls short. There is no need to create cheap shot stories built on false narrative- if you feel your view point is more accurate.

  2. Misrepresentations of the Godhead
Let People Know Our Position – Our policy is, Do not make prominent the objectionable features of our faith, which strike most decidedly against the practices and customs of the people, until the Lord shall give the people a fair chance to know that we are believers in Christ, that we do believe in the divinity of Christ, and in His pre – existence. – Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 253 (1895). Ev 613.2
We Shall Have to Meet Erroneous Teaching – Again and again we shall be called to meet the influence of men who are studying sciences of satanic origin, through which Satan is working to make a nonentity of God and of Christ. The Father and the Son each have a personality. Christ declared, “I and My Father are one.” Yet it was the Son of God who came to the world in human form. Laying aside His royal robe and kingly crown, He clothed His divinity with humanity, that humanity through His infinite sacrifice might become partakers of the divine nature, and escape the corruption that is in the world through lust. – Testimonies For The Church 9:68 (1909). Ev 613.3
Positive Truth Versus Spiritualistic Representations – I am instructed to say, The sentiments of those who are searching for advanced scientific ideas are not to be trusted. Such representations as the following are made: “The Father is as the light invisible: the Son is as the light embodied; the Spirit is the light shed abroad.” “The Father is like the dew, invisible vapor; the Son is like the dew gathered in beauteous form; the Spirit is like the dew fallen to the seat of life.” Another representation: “The Father is like the invisible vapor; the Son is like the leaden cloud; the Spirit is rain fallen and working in refreshing power.” Ev 614.1
All these spiritualistic representations are simply nothingness. They are imperfect, untrue. They weaken and diminish the Majesty which no earthly likeness can be compared to. God cannot be compared with the things His hands have made. These are mere earthly things, suffering under the curse of God because of the sins of man. The Father cannot be described by the things of earth. The Father is all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and is invisible to mortal sight. Ev 614.2
The Son is all the fullness of the Godhead manifested. The Word of God declares Him to be “the express image of His person.” “God so loved the world, that He gave His only – begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Here is shown the personality of the Father. Ev 614.3
The Comforter that Christ promised to send after He ascended to heaven, is the Spirit in all the fullness of the Godhead, making manifest the power of divine grace to all who receive and believe in Christ as a personal Saviour. There are three living persons of the heavenly trio; in the name of these three great powers – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – those who receive Christ by living faith are baptized, and these powers will co – operate with the obedient subjects of heaven in their efforts to live the new life in Christ. – Special Testimonies, Series B, No. 7, pp. 62, 63. (1905). Ev 615.1
The Pre – existent, Self – existent Son of God – Christ is the pre – existent, self – existent Son of God…. In speaking of his pre – existence, Christ carries the mind back through dateless ages. He assures us that there never was a time when He was not in close fellowship with the eternal God. He to whose voice the Jews were then listening had been with God as one brought up with Him. – The Signs of the Times, August 29, 1900. Ev 615.2
He was equal with God, infinite and omnipotent…. He is the eternal, self – existent Son. – Manuscript 101, 1897. Ev 615.3
From Everlasting – While God’s Word speaks of the humanity of Christ when upon this earth, it also speaks decidedly regarding His pre – existence. The Word existed as a divine being, even as the eternal Son of God, in union and oneness with His Father. From everlasting He was the Mediator of the covenant, the one in whom all nations of the earth, both Jews and Gentiles, if they accepted Him, were to be blessed. “The Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Before men or angels were created, the Word was with God, and was God. – The Review and Herald, April 5, 1906. Ev 615.4
Christ shows them that, although they might reckon His life to be less than fifty years, yet His divine life could not be reckoned by human computation. The existence of Christ before His incarnation is not measured by figures. – The Signs of the Times, May 3, 1899. Ev 616.1
Life, Original, Unborrowed, Underived – Jesus declared, “I am the resurrection, and the life.” In Christ is life, original, unborrowed, underived. “He that hath the Son hath life.” The divinity of Christ is the believer’s assurance of eternal life. – The Desire of Ages, 530 (1898). Ev 616.2
With the Father at Sinai – When they [Israel] came to Sinai, He took occasion to refresh their minds in regard to His requirements. Christ and the Father, standing side by side upon the mount, with solemn majesty proclaimed the Ten Commandments. – Historical Sketches, p. 231. (1866). Ev 616.3
The Eternal Dignitaries of the Trinity – The eternal heavenly dignitaries – God, and Christ, and the Holy Spirit – arming them [the disciples] with more than mortal energy, … would advance with them to the work and convince the world of sin. – Manuscript 145, 1901. Ev 616.4
Personality of the Holy Spirit – We need to realize that the Holy Spirit, who is as much a person as God is a person, is walking through these grounds. – Manuscript 66, 1899 (From a talk to the students at the Avondale School.). Ev 616.5
The Holy Spirit is a person, for He beareth witness with our spirits that we are the children of God. When this witness is borne, it carries with it its own evidence. At such times we believe and are sure that we are the children of God…. Ev 616.6
The Holy Spirit has a personality, else He could not bear witness to our spirits and with our spirits that we are the children of God. He must also be a divine person, else He could not search out the secrets which lie hidden in the mind of God. “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.” – Manuscript 20, 1906. Ev 617.1
The Power of God in the Third Person – The prince of the power of evil can only be held in check by the power of God in the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit. – Special Testimonies, Series A, No. 10, p. 37. (1897). Ev 617.2
In Co – operation With the Three Highest Powers – We are to co – operate with the three highest powers in heaven, – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, – and these powers will work through us, making us workers together with God. –

    • Let us not misunderstood heavenly trio with Trinity … Trinity doctrine teaches that there are three Gods … and all together are one in a form of one God … the heavenly trio does not say that … E. White never said that … we can interpret it by our own way but Scriptures does not interpret it by the way of our teaching … even e. White an all other did not say it … by the teachings of Trinity we are robbing Christ of His Sonship … if Christ is not the Son of God than Father is not the father at all .. it’s just a role (as many christians claim so) .. and then we miss Spirit on the throne with the Father and Son … there are a lot of fables and misinterpretations that are confronting the simplicity of the scriptures … maybe this video will give you the bigger picture where and how this idea had spread … the idea of Trinity … as i said before, let us not misinterpret heavenly trio with Trinity … it is not the same meaning … peace!

    • well … i can not agree with you that theologians can surely explain it because everyone preaches Trinity by his own understanding and that’s why this doctrine is named as “dogma” or an “idea” … if we claim to follow Jesus and Bible alone, then Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit … or One God in three personalities … or other form of Trinity) fails because Jesus alone said: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17,3)

Messiah means neither the Savior or Healer but man born without a Father.

Jesus said to never worship Trinity or Cross, he came to Save Children of Israel who were scattered around the World due to the Curse of Moses

He preached worshipping one Living God who created and controls Earth, Heaven, Galaxy and Universes. Jesus followed Old Testament, TORAH. Jesus hasn’t changed the Rules but Peter and John have changed the Rules.

His message was Love and Non Violence

    He said

    Take your Heart towards Tho!
    Tha is the Greatest! ”

??Jesus is neither God nor son of God but an Image of God??

After Greek’s, Romans became Christens and started Christianity.

Jesus was Uplifted to 4th Heaven where he was Present in his Etheric Body.
