The well-known Adventist Trinitarian Jerry Moon who was a co-author of the book “The Trinity” wrote:
“That most of the leading SDA pioneers were non-Trinitarian in their theology has become accepted Adventist history,”
He goes on to say, “either the pioneers were wrong and the present church is right, or the pioneers were right and the present Seventh-day Adventist Church has apostatized from biblical truth.” — (Jerry Moon, The Trinity, Chapter, Trinity and antitrinitarianism in Seventh-day Adventist history, p. 190)
He also says “The long process of change from early Adventists’ initial rejection of creedal trinitarianism to their eventual acceptance of a doctrine of the Trinity could rightly be called a search for a biblical Trinity.” source
In other words, The Trinity was once completely rejected and over time slowly accepted and now preached, championed for and even hidden within Adventist hymnals.
So were the pioneers wrong or has the Church apostatized from Biblical truth?
Note that Angel Manuel Rodriguez is a Seventh-day Adventist theologian and is the “director” of the Adventist BRI (Biblical Research Institute). In the November 2015 issue of “Adventist World” on page 42 he wrote the following:
“The Son is not the natural, literal Son of the Father. … The term “Son” is used metaphorically when applied to the Godhead.”
Where is there even the slightest hint in Scripture that they are not a literal Father and Son? As a Seventh day Adventist minister and evangelist said, “Christ is the only LITERAL Son of God. “The only begotten of the Father.” John 1:14.” — (J.G. Matteson, RH, October 12, 1869). [CAPS are added]
How can you say Jesus is NOT the begotten Son of the eternal Father and then share John 3:16 with others in the hope of inviting them to take part in eternal salvation. John 3:16 becomes a lie the moment you deny Jesus is the Son of God.
The Adventist Church now teaches that Christ is only the Son of God in the sense that He was born in Bethlehem. Read the following statements from Ellen White and ask yourself if she is saying that Jesus is the literal Son of God and hence was the first born of heaven before He came to Earth. [CAPS are added]
“God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son,”–not a son by creation, as were the angels, nor a son by adoption, as is the forgiven sinner, but a SON BEGOTTEN in the express image of the Father’s person,” — (E.G. White, ST, May 30, 1895)
“The dedication of the FIRST-BORN had its origin in the earliest times. God had promised to give the FIRST-BORN of HEAVEN to save the sinner.” — (E.G. White, DOA, p. 51)
“O what a gift God has made to our world! The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. God SENT HIS OWN SON in the likeness of sinful flesh, liable to physical infirmities, tempted in all points like as we are. HE WAS THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD. His personality did NOT begin with His INCARNATION in the flesh.” — (E.G. White, Lt77, August 3, 1894)
“Satan well knew the position that Christ had held in HEAVEN as the Beloved of the FATHER. That the SON OF GOD should come to this earth as a man filled him with amazement and with apprehension.” — (E.G. White, DOA, p.115)
“Angels that were loyal and true sought to reconcile this mighty, rebellious angel to the will of his Creator. They justified the act of God in conferring honor upon Christ, and with forcible reasoning sought to convince Lucifer that no less honor was his now than before the Father had proclaimed the honor which He had conferred upon His Son. They CLEARLY set forth that CHRIST was the SON OF GOD, existing with Him BEFORE the angels were created;” — (E.G. White, Story of Redemption, 15.2)
“All this holding to sentiments of infallibility is a specious device of the angel that was so exalted in the heavenly court. His beauty was so highly exalted that he thought he should be as God, and Christ must be second to him; but the Lord informed Satan this could not be possible. CHRIST WAS HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON” — (E.G. White, Lt157-1910)
In the Bible we find that Christ is called the “Son of God” 48 times, “only begotten” 6 times, “firstborn” 4 times and “the firstbegotten” 1 time. Not once does the Bible even so much as hint that Jesus is only a Son in a metaphorical sense as the director of the Adventist BRI stated. The Bible means what it says and says what it means as does Ellen White.
And she stated, “God is the Father of Christ; Christ is the Son of God.” — (E.G. White, 8T 268.3)
The Adventist Church has in fact apostatized and rejected Biblical truth that God gave His Church as a pillar of faith.
