A Muslim leader who wants to to be allowed to have a second wife has been told by his current spouse that she is fine with it.
Keysar Trad, who is president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, said it was natural for men to have more than wife and that it was better to have two wives than to divorce the first.
Mr Trad called for the part of Shariah law that allows for men to have up to four wives to be accepted in Australia and admitted that he wanted a second wife.
Remarkably, his wife, Hanifeh, insisted she would not mind if her husband married another woman, saying she has no right to stand in his way. You can read more here.
Generally speaking, there are two types of marriages in Islam:
• Monogamy: one man married to one woman;
• Polygamy means a system of marriage whereby one person has more than one spouse. Polygamy can be of two types. One is polygyny where a man marries more than one woman, and the other is polyandry, where a woman marries more than one man. In Islam, limited polygyny is permitted and polyandry is completely prohibited.
In Islam, the ideal marriage is the monogamous form of marriage. Limited polygyny is a provision approved by Islam for exceptional circumstances only; and that also with many stringent conditions.
Let’s wait and see what the Australian government will say about this. But of course this was always bound to happen. Some US States allow Shariah Law.
