Last May, one of the best times of Becky Anderson’s life turned into one of the worst when doctors informed her that she was pregnant and had cervical cancer.
Doctors urged the 35-year-old from Portsmouth, England to abort her unborn babies so surgeons could remove the cancer, according to The Sun. But Anderson refused.

Today, her twins Buddy and Preslee are 6 months old and doing well. Anderson said she is so glad she chose life for her twins, and refused to take her doctors’ advice.

Anderson, who also has two older children, learned that she was expecting in May 2016. Later that month, test results revealed that she also had cancer, according to the report.

“I’d gone from being on top of the world to being in the depths of despair, worrying whether I was going to actually survive,” she said. “At first, I refused to believe the results. It was really hard to take in — discovering you’re pregnant and have cancer at the same time. I just held my mum and cried. I knew I needed to survive for the sake of my children. There was no way I was leaving them.”

Anderson said she tried to stay positive for her children, but she also was afraid.

When more tests revealed that she had cervical cancer, Anderson said her main concern was for her unborn twins. Doctors had a different concern; they urged her to consider aborting her babies.

“They wanted to give me a hysterectomy the following week but I was adamant I would not have an abortion,” the mom recalled. “A hysterectomy would mean I’d be left infertile so this was my last chance to have children.”

She spent several weeks at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth as doctors monitored her condition. When she reached 30 weeks of pregnancy, her doctors decided that Anderson could not wait any longer, according to the report.

She gave birth to the twins by cesarean section, and then immediately underwent a hysterectomy, the report states.

Anderson said the first four days after her surgeries were extremely painful, and she was not able to see her newborn boys. When a nurse finally brought the twins to see her, she said she knew all of her struggles were worth it.

“I was exhausted and in agony but when they were placed on my chest, I breathed in their scent and just couldn’t believe they were here,” she said.

Six months later, the family is doing better. The twins are healthy, and their mother is waiting for tests to confirm whether her cancer is gone, according to the report. Anderson said the ordeal was painful and stressful, but she does not regret anything.

“I wouldn’t change it for the world,” she said. “They are an absolute joy and I love them very much.”
