Revelation 17:9-11,”9 This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction”.
Yesterday we saw that this beast carrying the woman is not Rome. Its Satan himself. The seven heads are seven attempts that Satan has tried unsuccessfully to capture the kingdom of God but as we will see at last this dominion will be stripped off from him forever.
THE FIRST 5 ATTEMPTS WHICH HAD FALLEN BY 98 AD WHEN JOHN WAS WRITING THE BOOK OF REVELATION.
1)THE FIRST ATTEMPT
The first well know attempt Satan wanted to take dominion from God was in Heaven, Revelation 12:7-9, “And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him”.
This attempt was completely defeated and Satan prepared for the next attempt!
2) THE SECOND ATTEMPT
God created man in his own image, character and power, Genesis 1:26,”God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth” check also Gen 1:28
By giving man dominion over everything God made man a small god on earth, Psalm 82:6, “Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High”. And man was to remain in this state would he have been obedient enough. But satan in his craftedness usurped dominion from man and now became the god/prince of this world, John 12:31, “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out”. This usurpation was not planned, satan took this dominion by force, thats why its called usurpation not passing on.
3) THE THIRD ATTEMPT: NOW PASSING ON TO NATIONS TO REBEL GOD
Satan after usurping dominion from man, passed on to rulers of this world and has been doing so each generation since Eden. His first attempt was to pass to Babylon, the first dominion to rebel openly to God and to desire to see this “God”
4) THE FOURTH ATTEMPT : To Medo-Persia
5) THE FIFTH ATTEMPT :To Greece
ALL THESE HAD FALLEN BY THE TIME JOHN WAS WRITING REVELATION.
