When he joined Catholic monk system he was usually amazed by working of pope! Luther was as yet but partially converted from the errors of Romanism. But as he compared the Holy Oracles with the papal decrees and constitutions, he was filled with wonder. “I am reading,” he wrote, “the decrees of the pontiffs, and I do not know whether the pope is antichrist himself, or his apostle, so greatly is Christ misrepresented and crucified in them.” Didache, b. 5, ch. 1. Yet at this time Luther was still a supporter of the Roman Church, and had no thought that he would ever separate from her communion
WHEN HE WAS COMPELLED TO GO TO DIET OF WORMS HE SAID, “The papists do not desire my coming to Worms, but my condemnation and my death. It matters not. Pray not for me, but for the word of God. Christ will give me His Spirit to overcome these ministers of error. I despise them during my life; I shall triumph over them by my death. They are busy at Worms about compelling me to retract; and this shall be my retraction: I said formerly that the pope was Christ’s vicar; now I assert that he is our Lord’s adversary, and the devil’s apostle.”
WHEN LUTHER WAS EXCOMMUNICATED AT DIET OF WORMS,
All persons were forbidden to harbor him, to give him food or drink, or by word or act, in public or private, to aid or abet him. He was to be seized wherever he might be, and delivered to the authorities. His adherents also were to be imprisoned and their property confiscated. His writings were to be destroyed, and, finally, all who should dare to act contrary to this decree were included in its condemnation. To him this made it clear that indeed the POPE was the real Anti-Christ. Opposing the truth! He died very sure that the Pope was the Anti-Christ, and he died still excommunicated by Catholic since 1721
HE NOW CONFIRMS, “INDEED POPE IS THE ANTI-CHRIST!!!”
When a papal bull (order) reached Luther, he said: “I despise and attack it, as impious, false. It is Christ Himself who is condemned therein. I rejoice in having to bear such ills for the best of causes. Already I feel greater liberty in my heart; for at last I know that the pope is antichrist, and that his throne is that of Satan himself.”–D’Aubigne, b. 6, ch. 9.
