One verse that is often misquoted to give the idea that the apostles changed the Sabbath law is
Colossians 2:16-17 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
Look at the plurality on day.
Colossians 2:16 KJV
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days :
The bible doesn’t say let no man judge you in respect of sabbath day, but sabbath days.
Besides the weekly sabbath, there were other sabbaths which the Jews were called upon to honour. Sabbath is Greek word for rest. Sabbath day means day of rest. The weekly sabbath was a rest day to be commemorated by Jews throughout their generations.
This is inscribed in the law that Jesus says I have not come to do away with the law but to fulfill it.
What were the other sabbaths? That we are told people should not judge you?
Leviticus 23:4-5, 7, 24, 27-29, 32, 34-35, 38-39 KJV
These are the feasts of the Lord , even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons. In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the Lord’s passover. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord . And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God. For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath. Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord . On the first day shall be an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein . Beside the Sabbaths of the Lord , and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto the Lord . Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days: on the first day shall be a Sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a Sabbath.
So, don’t jump at conclusions that Paul was negating the weekly sabbath, yet he kept it.
Isaiah 58:13-14 KJV
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord , honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord ; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it .
God holds the Sabbath day so dear. I don’t know why. If God punished Adam for disobedience regarding a mere tree? What is a tree? What makes us think that he can not hold us accountable for disobedience to the Sabbath, which God Himself, hallowed and blessed it?
Well, people will say, I don’t care. But the truth is, Adam knows what not caring means.
What about in heaven? Will there be Sabbath assembly? Let’s ask the bible.
Isaiah 66:22-23 KJV
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord , so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord .
Now, question, if we are dishonoring the Lord’s Sabbath here, why would you want to go to heaven, where the same Sabbath is honored?
Do you see the irony and hypocrisy of this generation?
We read the bible selectively. If we do read, We only read those things that please us. Those things that makes us merry. We don’t want to be told our choices have consequences.
Well, your and my choices have consequences.
Deuteronomy 30:16, 19 KJV
In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
